Thai Reach | Khon Kaen, Thailand

https://www.thaireach.org/

Thai Reach began in August 2017 by the husband and wife team of James Quilty and Dr. Pariyasoot Intasuwan.  Originally developed in partnership with the Sirindhorn Hospital in Khon Kaen to test the open source e-NABLE hands for a nearby community with Hansen's Disease (leprosy).

They have become a regional hub with collaborations at all levels within the hospital, international partnerships, and support from the national government and the academic community.  The team provides training courses for and has supported the creation of other printing labs across Thailand.

In May, the team collaborated with Jon Schull at the Exponential Manufacturing Summit in Bangkok, Thailand to discuss the philosophies and exponential trends behind e-NABLE’s distributed organization, as well as the responsibility of a ‘caring ecology’.  As a grand finale, Thai Reach presented a newly redesigned hand, a project in collaboration with young recipient Nirut. Inspired by the story, the conference organizers presented a college scholarship to Nirut to support his continued studies.

Thai Reach is an example of the power of the e-NABLE community, harnessing distributive technologies to take local action and make huge impacts in the lives of Thai people.  At the beginning of 2019, Thai Reach had ‘enabled’ 74 clients in just 14 months. Thank you Thai Reach for all of your hard work!

Accessibility Pioneers

in Thailand

April 2019

Thai Reach, one of Southeast Asia’s most prolific new eNABLE chapters, has helped organize a new maker-space lab at Sri Sang Wan School, the only school for people with severe disabilities in the most populous region of Thailand.

As the 3-D printers were installed, Community Founder Jon Schull and e-NABLE reporter Ben Rubin were on the scene to capture the magic with photos and illustrations.

e-NABLE

in the Curriculum

May 2019

Teachers in Conshohocken, PA aim to include e-NABLE collaborations as a recurring project in their ‘Be the Change you Wish to See in the World' unit.

The school uses hands-on learning to support students with language-based learning disabilities. As an introduction into global volunteerism, students customized 12 Phoenix v2 hands for refugees at the Zaatari camp in Jordan.

e-NABLE has Funds:

You have Projects:

June 2019

The Enable Fund is growing!  With $15,000 from the Howard and Abby Milstein Foundation and another $20,000 from Dell USA LP arriving in the final days of June, we are inviting new funding proposals from all corners of the e-NABLE universe.  Proposals are approved through a process of feedback and votes using E-nablio, our Loomio-based decision-making platform.  Learn about previously funded projects, review tips for proposals, and share all ideas in the new e-NABLE ‘Half-Bakery ’to help define your goals and project ideas.

Data Duty

  • Our 2019 audit of chapters was begun in June, and is nearing completion.  Currently there are around 140 chapters across 55 unique countries!

    • We have been combing through the results and reaching out to chapters classified as ‘inactive’ for their status and updated info.  If you have any new information on your site, please contact Bob Rieger.

  • We need some detail-oriented collaborators who are willing to help collect interviews from our committed volunteers, many of whom have vast amounts of qualitative and quantitative information.  By collating, organizing and analyzing the data, we can become more agile with the resources available and bring in new funding streams to support chapter projects.  For more information on the importance of data gathering, check out the Measuring our Impact story.  Join the discussion and share your ideas in the Issues section!

  • The Badges initiative is moving forward and your efforts should be recognized.
If you have an idea for a new badge, you could be the next recipient of the ‘Proposed a Badge’ Badge!

Medical Collaboration Project

Saiph Savage is leading a group studying e-NABLE interactions with medical professionals around the world.  If you have some experiences to share, please email Saiph.  Thanks to e-NABLE Brazil and e-NABLE Medellin for their recent contributions to this project.
